  1. Concha y Toro 2005 Marques de Casa Concha syrahRegion  Peumo, Rapel Valley, Chile
    Type  Red Still
    ABV  14.0%
    Variety  100% Syrah

I could have mistaken this dark, glossy purple Syrah for Malbec across the border. It packed a hefty punch of smoke, wood, gamey blackberries and mocha like any Shiraz does, only without the signature spice in the full, muscular mouthful. Superripe, succulent flavours and rounded tannin cruised to a straightforward finish. While it didn’t make us sing, we couldn’t resist yearning for a bite at Big Mac halfway in. With little gas left in the tank, it still was a worthy half-priced capture. — 3

  2. 2010 Montes Limited Selection Pinot NoirRegion  Casablanca Valley, Chile
    Type  Red Still
    ABV  14.0%
    Variety  100% Pinot Noir

The only condiment you ever need to go with Chinese roast duck is a medium-bodied red. The Montes coastal Pinot Noir killed it with fresh cherry charm and appealing feminine touch. There was substance but also lightness to the juicy cherry and raspberry core, faint barnyard and herby scent to the fore, down with the clean finish alongside supple tannins. This understated New World Pinot put on a delightful show on the table. — 3

  3. 2008 Veramonte PrimusRegion  Colchagua Valley, Chile
    Type  Red Still
    ABV  14.5%
    Variety  44% Cabernet, 21% Syrah, 19% Carmenere, 15% Merlot

(Poured at Veramonte Wine Tasting@La Bodega Lounge) There’s a risk saving the best for last. Three glasses and a good time in the lounge before sampling the estate’s flagship Primus had sort of clouded my palate. Without a doubt of a shadow a cut above the Reservas: it’s full, balanced, rich in dark cherry, smoky, seasoned with a nice touch of spice and that leafy aroma… that’s about all that I can tell.

  4. 2008 Veramonte Reserva MerlotRegion  Casablanca Valley, Chile
    Type  Red Still
    ABV  13.5%
    Variety  100% Merlot

(Poured at Veramonte Wine Tasting@La Bodega Lounge) The herbaceous aroma choked to the point where I suspected my glass was swapped for Chinese herb medication right under my nose. Brash green, leafy theme prevailed on the palate, shoving red fruits out of the way and persisted into a bitter, herb-accented end. This medium-bodied Merlot is way off your ordinary easydrinking namesake varietal by miles. Interesting, thanks but no thanks.

  5. 2010 Veramonte Reserva Sauvignon BlancRegion  Casablanca Valley, Chile
    Type  White Still
    ABV  13.5%
    Variety   100% Sauvignon Blanc

(Poured at Veramonte wine tasting @ La Bodega) Modest aroma of upfront citrus. Bright lemony flavors tinged with green apple defined the palate. Finished crisp with similar notes. This Sauvy though paled in comparison to the impressive 2008. Softer and less intense, it should rightfully make way for the fresher 2011 vintage come December. The underside of 60MYR would have gained Veramonte the edge in an increasingly crowded Chilean SB offerings. Reliable thirst quencher.

  6. 2008 Los Vascos Cabernet SauvignonRegion  Colchagua Valley, Chile
    Type  Red Still
    ABV  14.0%
    Variety   100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Meet Los Vascos, the poor man’s Lafite from across the Atlantic—at a fraction of the price. This deep red rendered aroma of black cherries, tobacco and a hint of herbs. Medium-weight, it tasted slightly medicinal, bitter and fairly firm before settling into a softer mid-palate supported by earthy/rubbery cassis and cherries. Finished dry and okay with kind tannins. It came across a little robust at first, but the edges soon rounded off in the glass. A solid Colchagua Cab for which we overpaid at the wrong place.
