  1. 2011 Saint Clair Premium Sauvignon BlancRegion  Marlborough, New Zealand
    Type  White Still
    ABV  13.0%
    Variety  100% Sauvignon Blanc

There is no stopping the aroma of passion fruit from this gloriously chilled Sauvignon Blanc. Consistent with the popular house style, it’s a medium-bodied tropical cocktail, juicy and alive, all the more perfect for the unforgiving temperatures. More poised than the lower tier Vicar’s Choice, focus and concentration are what that stands on its way from joining the RM100++ elitist Marlborough Sauvignon. Guzzle it, don’t sip. — 3

  2. 2010 Leasingham Bin 7 RieslingRegion  Clare Valley, South Australia
    Type  White Still
    ABV  12.5%
    Variety  100% Riesling

The Bin 7 Riesling opened with a gust of lovely pineapple, pear and apple. Juicy palate picked up where the nose left off with lime and lemon tinged by sprightly, Sauvignon-like zing. Bone-dry and tight, the austerity of steely mineral began to impose itself as I pit it half-heartedly against the spiciness of otak-otak. Its full retail price however is too steep a barrier for any frugal customer looking for an honest, delicious sipper.

  3. 2010 Santa Julia TorrontesRegion  Mendoza, Argentina
    Type  White Still
    ABV  12.5%
    Variety  100% Torrontes

Torrontes has always intrigued me as an aromatic novelty, hence I decided to find out once and for all. This Santa Julia entry-level white was literally rose water in disguise. Floral perfume dominated flavors of apple and lemon blend. The whimsical bath soap taste was arguably not as sanitary as it suggested when it comes to beverage. Light-to-medium bodied, the aftertaste was as simple as it gets. One of those bottles I just want to get it done and over with.

  4. 2010 Houghton White ClassicRegion  Western Australia, Australia
    Type  White Still
    ABV  13.0%
Variety  Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Semillon, Riesling

It might as well be renamed ‘Yellow’ Classic by the time of consumption, pardon my makeshift closet storage. Upfront stone fruits and limey aroma was straightforward and modest. Nothing sensational about the light, tame palate of lemon and gooseberry, as the quick finish concurred. Did what it does best, highly gulpable if a bit flabby for the full retail price imho. It paired surprisingly well with sweet Teochew beanpaste mooncake. Drink youngest available.

  5. 2011 Santa Rita Reserva Sauvignon BlancRegion   Casablanca Valley, Chile
    Type   White Still
    ABV   13.4%
    Variety   100% Sauvignon Blanc

Casablanca Valley embodied my Sauvignon ideal nigh on perfection, as far as my current state of tasting prowess goes. An intense, aromatic nose showed gooseberry and lemon of fine purity, with grassy undertone. Beautiful citrus sang on the midweight palate, aptly backed by a dash of mineral. Mouthwatering and zippy, it left a clean definition and good length too. A lip-smacking Sauvy to tuck away by the case for summertime. —

  6. Saint Clair 2011 Vicar's Choice Sauvignon BlancRegion  Marlborough, New Zealand
    Type  White Still
    ABV  13.0%
    Variety  100% Sauvignon Blanc

If textbook Kiwi Sauvignon is supposed to taste ‘punchy’, ‘pungent’ or ‘grassy’, maybe I’m reading an altogether different book. Crafted in riper, fuller house-style, its fragrance and flavors centered on rich passionfruit, gooseberry and tropical fruits, with a modicum of cut grass. I’d have fancied more zest than weight, but it was very much in fashion due to its approachability and lusciousness. I was much less appreciative of the mineral quality in my salmon belly sushi it brought out.
